The Chair was founded 2nd January 2001. The main activities of the Chair are directed at developing methods and materials for English language teaching in accordance with the highest modern standards, which requires scholarly research in the field of innovative approaches to teaching foreign languages in general and English in particular. The subordinate activities of the Chair are oriented to enhancing the methodological and pedagogical competences of foreign language instructors both at the University and in Dniepropetrovsk region in general. In view of the mentioned above, the Chair’s faculty members have developed and published more than 9 coursebooks and books (8 of which have received the recommendation of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine), more than 200 scholarly articles and thesis statements, many of which are published abroad (the USA, Great Britain, China, Czech Republic, France, Spain, Finland, etc.). The Chair’s teaching staff participates in the most prestigious international conferences both in Ukraine and abroad (Great Britain, the USA, Austria, Switzerland, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Finland, Poland, etc.). In order to implement the teaching process the Chair faculty members have developed and produced a wide range of teaching materials. Thus, in the period from January 2001 (the period of the Chair foundation) till the present the Chair staff have developed nine and upgraded four courses, prepared and published six course synopses, twenty four curricula, seventy four syllabi, and six course guidelines. The Chair yearly develops and upgrades its assessment, testing and examination materials. One of the considerable achievments of the Chair’s methodological activities is the development of teaching second foreign languages and third foreign languages – with the the necessary teaching materials for relevant courses. Another positive result obtained by the Chair is developing an innovative specialized course in Communicative Behavioural Patterns in English-Speaking Countries – with teaching materials for it. Teaching materials have also been developed for such subjects as Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages and Psychological and Pedagogical aspects of Teaching Foreign Languages. The major accomplishment has been the development and introduction into teaching practice of the FCE Preparatory Course training students for taking Cambridge First Certificate in English examination, as well as elaborating the DELE Preparatory Course (Deploma de Espa?ol como Lengua Extranjera). The former course has been introduced as compulsory for the third year students at International Communication and International Economics Departments, whereas the latter is an optional one. A great number of students have already passed the FCE Cambridge examinations successfully and received internationally recognized Cambridge Certificates in English. The same concerns DELE examinations in Spanish. One more important achievement of the Chair was the introduction of the Refresher Programme for foreign language teachers and instructors. |
